Fact/Fiction: Driving Truth Into Policy Debate
An incisive and practical panel discussion that uses the example of EconoFact.org to directly address what can be done today in news and social media to combat the corrosive effects of glib and highly partisan policy debates that are affecting our country’s future. If in such discussions, we as a society can’t agree on the relevant facts, then the nation itself loses a common base for constructive debate and policy will suffer. Executive director of news content Richard Chacon will be part of this panel conversation which will further touch upon the potential of the academy as an active and agnostic participant in public policy debates, as well as upon re-imagined civic-duty capabilities of local media as clear-eyed analysts of national policy.
Thursday, October 12
11:10 a.m. to noon
Green dome, City Hall Plaza
Future Forum: Technology is Amoral; People Aren’t
Much of the debate around technology and innovation ends up polarized. The oblivious optimist: technology is our savior. The anxious pessimist: robots will take over the world. The truth of the matter is this: technology itself is not going to save us, and technology itself is not going to ruin us. Hear from experts across industry as they help us answer: how do we put pressure in the right places to ensure that technological advancement serves each and every one of us? Reporter Asma Khalid will interview Andrew McAfee on the future of work. Other conversations will explore: smart cities, privacy, artificial intelligence, revolutionary treatments and impact investing.
